Model Context Protocol

Let an agent work with your notesThe MCP server runs on this computer and speaks to the client over a pipe — nothing is published and no account is involved. An agent can then search, read, create and update your notes, and manage prompts.

Needs the desktop appThe server is a local process, so it only exists where DurnNotes is installed.

Get the app

Any other clientPaste this into whatever the client uses for its server list. The command is this app's own binary, run with --mcp.

Adding writes a durnnotes entry into that client's own config file, keeping everything already in it and saving a .bak alongside.

What the app knows about this deviceRead from the browser or the app shell. None of it is sent anywhere.

Network address

Public IP addressThe app never looks this up on its own. Pressing the button asks api.ipify.org what address this connection comes from, and records that it was asked.

Who opened what you sharedEach public link records the device type and time it was opened, so you can see a link being used and revoke it. Revoking is immediate.

App lock

Lock DurnNotes with a passcodeA passer-by at your unlocked Mac cannot read your notes. This does not encrypt the file on disk — see Advanced for where that file lives.

Outgoing model callsOffline mode refuses every call to a provider, from the assistant and from agents. Nothing leaves this machine.

What agents may do unattended

Writes that run without asking—

Agents

Jobs you can hand overAn agent is a name, a model, a brief and the tools it may use. Reads run on their own; anything that writes to a note stops and asks you first.

Add oneStart from a preset, or write your own brief.

Storage on this device

What is stored, and how big it isEverything the app keeps in this browser's storage for this origin. Your notes are the only part that matters; the rest is preferences and the log.

Permissions

What the app is allowed to doRead from the browser. Nothing on this page asks for a permission — it only reports the answer.

This build

What this copy can doWhen something is missing, this says whether it is the build or the browser.

Your data

Export everythingEvery note, project and preference as one JSON file. Nothing is left behind and nothing is sent anywhere.

Import a backupReplaces what is here with the contents of an exported file. The current data is exported first, automatically.

Reset preferencesAppearance, layout, editor settings and panel state go back to their defaults. Your notes are not touched.

Delete everything on this deviceNotes, preferences and the log. This cannot be undone, so an export is offered first.

Notes & backups

Notes file—

Daily backupsOne snapshot per day, last 14 kept. Restoring replaces the current notes (a copy is kept).

About

DurnNotes—

What’s new

UpdatesNever checked.

Check automaticallyOnce a day, the app asks GitHub what the newest release is and says so if there is one. Nothing about you is sent — it is a plain read of the public releases list, and every check is written to the activity log. It never installs anything on its own.

Where your notes liveOne JSON document on this device, written atomically. Sync is optional and runs on infrastructure you can point at your own Supabase project.
